So, have you decided to do some renovation in your bathroom, but the financial implications scare the life out of you? Perhaps you want to turn your bathroom into a cool, relaxing space but you cannot afford it? Well, the good news is you do not need big dollars to change the condition of your bathroom. There are several ways you can remodel your bathroom without spending a fortune while doing so.
The first thumb of the rule is to not look at home improvement in Calgary as losing money, think of it as increasing your home’s value – as an investment. You should look at what you can afford to determine how much you can change around the bathroom. If you realize your budget is too low, you might want to do cosmetic changes for example, a new sink, painting, and maybe some new fixtures but if you are willing to spend more, you could make big changes like bringing in a new window or bath tab. The following are a few changes you can make to your bathroom to make it look better when working on a budget.
1. Use tiles in portions
It can be very expensive to tile the whole bathroom especially when you cannot do it yourself and have to hire a contractor to do it for you. When you are on a budget, you can cut on costs by only putting the tiles in areas where they are needed like the floor. For the wall of the bathroom, you could put a strip of tile around the wall, somewhere in the middle, and then paint the rest of the wall. That way, you reduce the amount of money you would have spent on tiling.
2. Save on counter tops
Most people love granite countertops in their bathrooms. The reasoning is, the bathroom counters are considerably small and therefore you will not spend too much buying the granite. In order to save on this, you should consider the colors. Some colors like brown and tan are very popular which makes them expensive. You should therefore look for other less neutral colors. These will be fairly cheaper. Another way to save up on granite counter tops is to use an old dresser to replace a sink pedestal. All you have to do is to cut the top of the dresser and fit the sink on the space. You should cut holes at the back of the dresser to allow for plumbing. The result is a beautiful bathroom counter and sink that would normally cost a lot.
3. Painting is always economical
When you have very little money to spend on your bathroom, you could just paint. It is the cheapest single thing that has the greatest result on its own. However, you should be prepared to spare enough time for the job. Even though your bathroom may be the smallest room in the house, it has so many items you do not want your paint to touch. So you will be forced to paint slowly around windows, sink, the toilet, the tub, the mirror, and any other surface in the bathroom that should not have paint over it but needs paint on the adjacent wall surfaces. You should also be prepared to buy special paint that is resistant to the growth of molds. A paint-job with a satin finish would be perfect for the job.
4. Update fixtures frugally
For a small amount of money, you can cover the little details and upgrade. You can get a new sink faucet, drawer handles or pulls, fixtures, and towel racks. These items may seem like small changes but making them may make a big change in how your bathroom looks. The beautiful part is that you do not have to, necessarily, go for the brand new items. For example if you can find a house about to be brought down, you can relieve it of some of the little items you need if they are in better condition than the ones at your house.
Redo items and not buying them brand new
To avoid spending too much money on fixtures and other bathroom replacement items, you can redo them and not replace them entirely. For example, it would cost so much to buy new tub but if you have a professional reline it, you could save a lot of money. However, do not do this with fixtures such as shower fixtures and the sinks. With these, it takes more to redo than to buy new ones. So instead of having a redo or buying a new one, you can compromise and buy slightly used ones. Search online for some good deals on slightly used fixtures that are still in good condition. They are considerably cheaper than new ones and sometimes are almost as good as new.
